Jason:
I always recommend casting the rods WITH the lines you plan to use. I view this as the search for a magic wand. If you will be using a Scandinavian style line, Bealah does a very good job of matching their lines to their rods, I would recommend purchasing them together.

Hi Craig,

I too have narrowed the search for my first switch rod down to either a TFO or Bealah. I hadn't given much attention to Echo's line, but will revisit it on your recommendation. Ultimately, I'm looking for an all purpose northern California and southern Oregon switch - something comparable to the TFO DC #6 or the Bealah 6/7 to chase summer steelhead and medium sized winter steelhead. I will cast each before I buy, but would love your general opinion on each company, their attention to detail and craftmanship, and customer service. Please feel free to email me if you'd prefer to be discrete.

Thanks in advance,

Fab:
Glad to hear you enjoyed the switch rod pieces and found them helpful.
From Shad to Chinook is a pretty big stretch for one rod to cover. If you drop Chinook out of the equation then a six weight though taxed will be big enough to handle winter steelies and the large flies you'll want to throw with a Skagit, but light enough to still enjoy Shad. You will be severely undergunned for Chinook however which require an eight or nine weight. A seven weight switch is a compromise but not a good one as you'll seldom have the ideal rod for the game. Several friends have recently purchased twelve and a half or thirteen foot speys in eight and nice weights for their heavy lifting and are really enjoying them.
TFO makes fine rods which are a great value. I an wondering if you have also considered Echo and Beulahs in the same price range? Feel free to ring me to discuss it in detail.

Hi Craig,

Thanks a lot for these articles about switch rod fishing; they're a huge help in understanding the gear and technique.
Up to now I've only fished brown trout (dry fly mainly) in rivers and rainbow trout in lakes and reservoirs.
I'm planning to settle down in the Seaside area, north west Oregon coast. Not the best area for the kind of fly fishing I'm used to, but obviously a great opportunity to tackle steelhead, salmon and shad!
I suppose you're bothered all year long with questions, but if you could indulge me, I would really appreciate it:
what would be the best suited switch rod for me in the TFO Deer Creek Series Switch rods?
I'll be fishing the Columbia tributaries, the Necanicum river, Nehalem river,Wilson river,Trask river, Nestucca river.
I like to fish rather - reasonably- light, not expecting trophy fish and really enjoying the fight on lighter tackle, provided it doesn't harm the fish, of course.
I'd like to use only one rod all year long, summer and winter fishing, adapting the line profile and density (depth, size of fly ....)
Well, I've fed you all the data ;-)
Don't hesitate to suggest another brand if need be - but the TFO seem real good rods and are within my budget.
Thanks a lot for reading me,
Looking forward to your advice
All the best
