First Steelhead of the season, a birthday gift on the Umpqua River

Umpqua River fly fishing guide Tony Wratney tail's Craig's first steelie of the season July 16 & 17th

How do fly fishing guides celebrate a birthday?  Go fishing!  Craig and Jerri Nielsen, guides and owners of Shasta Trout, celebrated Craig’s birthday at the Steamboat Inn on the famed Umpqua River.  They treated themselves to a guide date with Tony Wratney who has been guiding the fly water on the North Fork Umpqua longer than anyone.  Last month they celebrathed their 25th anniversary and had such a great trip they decided to return.  Flows are dropping on the Umpqua and the first run of Summer Steelhead is trickling in.  The  Umpqua is beautiful and magical with fish that are surface oriented, we were each able to raise a fish and in the very last run of the morning, Tony and Craig risked a swim in high water to fish the Station run, where Craig was able to land his first steelhead of the season, a big bright buck.  What a great birthday present!
