It’s official, the Lower Sacramento River turned silly good this week as several of our guests enjoyed some of the best fishing and catching of their lives! Consider this your complimentary notice to get here now.
The hatches were not prolific but it didn’t seem to matter much as the fish were on the grab. We saw a fair number of Pink Alberts (Epeorus) midday with a few spring caddis before and some PMD’s, March Browns and summer caddis later in the day. Fish continued to take rubberlegs and egg patterns as well. With the low flows many of the fish seemed to be podded up and where we found one there were often more, with the bite at times becoming unbelievable with one big Rainbow after another.
One of our good friends, Bob joined us for another amazing day. He always seems to bring his good luck with him and we have come to call him “Bob Yesterday” as in, you should have been here “Yesterday with BOB!” We went through one short run and hooked seven fish in seven passes which officially turned the day into silly good. He has been fly fishing regularly for over a decade and this was one of three of the best days he’s ever had, one of the others was last September with us on the Lower Sac! We swear he carries a fish magnet in his pocket but has yet to share the secret with us. Perhaps we will gain his trust when he joins us again next month?
The week started with a couple of brothers, Jon and Kurt who enjoyed each others’ company as much as the amazingly good grab. They hooked many more fish than they were able to land as several of the ‘bows were pure brutes, while they also managed to bring several fine fish to hand. We are looking forward to fishing with these great guys again later this season as they have already scheduled another trip.
Gabe and Jeff joined us for a couple days, the first with a bit of rain and drizzle which slowed the bite but they followed it with a bright sunny day that was just phenomenal. Gabe is a new dad so was pleased to be able to sneak away for a fishing trip. Gabe took some photos and video for his website Lazy Lopez Productions which features fine photography, video and a blog. Look for an upcoming feature on their trip.
A father and son joined us for a day they will fondly remember for years to come. John and Kirby have visited fisheries throughout the west from their home in Maryland but had not heard of, or ever visited, the Lower Sac. They could not have been more pleasantly surprised. After a brief introduction to the techniques and tactics it was game on as the action became almost non stop to the take out. We hope and expect to share some of our other north state gems including the McCloud and Klamath with them in the near future.
Craig also enjoyed a fine day with our good friend Ben on the Upper Sac. We explored the high flows with both a dry dropper rig and indicator nymphing the big runs with considerable success. Finding fish and hooking them was only the start. Most of the fish we find this time of year are large and landing them once they get out into the heavy current is another matter entirely. Ben was up to the task and brought a couple very nice fish to hand.
