Chuck and Jim returned for a little camping, fishing, and a magical day on the McCloud. We took the drive down to the Conservancy but when we discovered a number of other anglers had the same idea we opted for a gorgeous stretch upstream. This is a rugged part of the river, with mandatory crossings and challenging wading. These guys were not a bit fazed, taking in all in stride and we enjoyed a solid bite all day, hooking several fish and landing several fine specimens. We briefly met one other angler who had just arrived and was headed downstream, otherwise we had it all to ourselves. We were anxious for the evening hatch to begin as the bite was getting better as the day evolved but as sun set and the surface action should have been peaking it fizzled, the only disappointment in an otherwise perfect day.
