April 23 -27th

ShastaTrout Fly Fishing Guide reports indicate that this is easily the best season opener we have enjoyed in several years.  With the exception of the Upper Sacramento River, which is high from runoff,  the local rivers were in superb condition and by all accounts the fish were eager and willing.

Guides

Craig Nielsen, Rick Cox, John Rickard and Chuck Volckhausen spent their days on the McCloud River with some outstanding results, several trophy fish including a massive Rainbow caught by Rick’s friend Rocky who is a neighbor in McCloud.  The number of exceptionally large fish, including a beautiful Brown caught by Craig’s good friend Bill was amazing, particularly because Bill opted to fish primarily with a dry fly rig.

The dry fly fishing has even improved over the last few days along with the cloudy skies that rolled in.

Local Guides

Alan Blankenship and Fred Gordon headed for the Pit River where the fish continue to be very grabby and their guests enjoyed superb weather, excellent conditions (the water is a bit higher than the norm) and many willing trout.  Tom Peppas had a stellar extended weekend on the Fall River with some great hatches including some fine fish on large BWO dries to go along with a few PMD’s.   The bite continued on dries, streamers and nymphing until this afternoon when the wind drove both the bugs and anglers off the water.

Gabe Durand spent his last five days on the Lower Sac which continues to be unbelievable.   Chip, a guest who is new to fly fishing enjoyed a day with Craig on Friday and then Gabe on Saturday and was a quick study.  He not only hooked some real trophies, he landed several as well.  The last couple days also included some exceptional dry fly fishing as the overcast skies brought PMD’s and rising Rainbows.
