Umpqua River

The Umpqua River is perhaps the most fabled steelhead river on the planet.  Some of the finest anglers in the world have visited and many consider it the finishing school for the hardcore enthusiast.  The Umpqua consists of the Main Stem, the South Fork and the North Umpqua which is home to the famous fly only section above Deadline Falls.  The summer run fish on the North Umpqua are very surface oriented and will viciously attack a skated or waked fly.  The main stem and South Fork have strong runs of exceptionally large winter run fish which will move to a swung fly as well as nymphing techniques.

While we practice walk and wade and swing flies on the fly only section of the North Fork, we use a variety of techniques and a boat for access on the lower North Fork, the South Fork and the mainstem.  Umpqua steelhead come in as well conditioned as any inland run of steelhead on the planet and some refuse to be landed making for some very exhilarating hook ups, with runs into the backing and spectacular leaps a common occurrence!
