Shasta River Conservancy

Big Springs Purchased

The Nature Conservancy closed escrow March 6th on a critical piece of the Shasta River known as Big Springs.   The Shasta is historically second only to the Trinity tributary as a  nursery for anadramous fish in the Klamath River System.  This purchase is intended to reestablish  high quality flows in an effort to rehabilitate the Shasta and may turn out to be more important and critical than removing dams for restoring runs of Coho, Spring Chinook and Steelhead to the Shasta and the Klamath mainstem.  For more info on this historic event read Peter Fimrite’s piece in today’s Chronicle.
