Shasta Trout guides chase illusive summer steelhead on the Umpqua River

September 1-3rd

We had some trip cancellations on the McCloud River due to the Bagley fire so decided to escape the smoke and headed north back to the Umpqua to chase summer Steelhead.  Fire crews have taken control of the Bagley fire and are mopping up.  While the smoke has cleared, the roads into the McCloud River are not open and as of this morning, the Forest Service has not yet set a date for roads to reopen.

Craig and Jerri spent the Labor Day weekend camping at the luxurious Susan Creek campground (towering Douglas Firs and hot showers) with one of our favorite runs just a short walk upstream.

Jerri just after a big beautiful Umpqua Buck jumps off her line We found a couple fish in favorite runs, Craig raised a fish twice in the Fairview run but could not get it to hang on to his fly.  Jerri had better luck, jumping an eight pound buck in a sweet little run with some rare, easy wading (you’ll have to find this one on your own).  The weather was phenomenal and the fishing grand.  It’s been a fairly good year on the Umpqua and we are searching our calendars to schedule a return.  Feel free to drop a line if you are headed that way, we would be more than happy to share all we can.
