Dean River, British Columbia

August 2007

In the summer of ’07 Craig was invited by a few friends to join them for an adventure down the famed Dean River swinging flies for steelhead. Most anglers fish the Dean from lodges where prime times are expensive and difficult to acquire. We planned ours as a do it yourself eight day rafting and camping trip. There are several rapids including a couple Class III/IV’s along the way and no camping facilities, requiring anglers to be self sufficient and resourceful. Two of us drove a truck to Bella Coola loaded with rafts and gear. We met the other two members who flew in to sample the local waters teeming with Salmon and Dollies prior to our helicopter flight to the remote Dean. We set up four camps along the Dean fishing each for two days. Though it was a poor year on the Dean for these famed summer run Steelhead the fish we hooked and landed were memorable. The river and scenery are absolutely spectacular and the overall experience exceptional. If you or your group have an interest in the Dean or similar destinations please drop us a line.
