Twenty year anniversary of the Upper Sacramento River Disastrous Spill

July 14, 1991

It’s been twenty years today since the disastrous spill at Cantara Loop on the Upper Sacramento River killed every living organism downstream all thirty eight miles to Lake Shasta.  We fished the run directly downstream from the Cantara trestle one evening this week and caught wild Rainbow Trout on dry flies, a sign the river has recovered remarkably well, though there is still work to do to help protect this and other local rivers. We are attending a meeting tonight in Cassel sponsored by Cal Trout to discuss flows on the Pit and McCloud River. We hope you will join us.

The video above was taken by an ABC news crew and can also be viewed on Cal Trout’s website.
